Often the stigma around mental illness and suicide prevents people from reaching out and seeking supporting during times of crisis. When we start the conversation about suicide, we can positively impact those who may not be ready to talk about it. In starting the conversation, we become supportive allies in their journey.
In partnership with Alberta Health Services (Chestermere Addictions and Mental Health), Chestermere Family and Community Support Services, Community Services, Waiting Room Café, and Synergy, we have been able to honour those who have been impacted by suicide. The partnership works to bring the community together on this day each year to provide a safe space, recognize the importance of this issue, and to offer an opportunity to connect.
Did You Know… Chestermere has a memorial tree and bench located in the Kinniburgh area? The memorial tree was planted during the first annual WSPD ceremony to honour those who we have lost due to suicide and to provide comfort for those impacted by suicide. Since then, we have been working with City Parks’ staff adding a memorial bench and greenery for visitors.
If you would like to get involved in planning the annual event, to find out about upcoming training opportunities related to suicide prevention, or to learn more information, contact the Family and Community Services Coordinator at (403) 207-8152.
