Chestermere Emergency Management Agency (CHEMA) would like to remind all residents to participate in Emergency Preparedness Week and learn the tools to prepare themselves and their families in case of an emergency.
“We are participating in Emergency Preparedness Week to promote awareness about what you can do to prepare your family and provide information on how we are prepared as a community,” said Donelda Laing, Director of Emergency Social Services, for the City of Chestermere. “We can’t know what will happen, but by being prepared, you can know what to do when something does happen.”
Emergency Preparedness Week is a Canada wide initiative coordinated by Public Safety Canada. This year, Chestermere will be hosting a variety of opportunities and activities for residents to learn about what to do in emergencies including hosting an Open House at the Fire Hall on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents attending the Open House will be able to see Sparky the Fire Dog, take a look at fire truck displays, meet the members of CHEMA, visit the resource table for emergency social services information and view the Red Cross emergency response vehicle. Visitors will also be able to enter in a draw to win an emergency preparedness backpack kit from the Canadian Red Cross.
“You can always call us for information, but the benefit of the Open House is to get all the information for emergency preparedness in one place,” said Brian Pomrenke, Acting Fire Chief for Chestermere Fire Services. “Your kids will have a great time and you will come away with more information about how you can ensure your family is ready to handle an emergency.”
In addition to the Open House, residents can also attend an Emergency Preparedness (E-Prep) Workshop on May 10 or a Lunch n Learn on May 12 to learn how to create your own personal preparedness plan. To learn more about these workshops or to register, visit www.chestermere.ca/calendars.
Emergency preparedness tips will be posted on the City’s Facebook page all week. Share, like or comment on our posts and you will have the chance to win one of four personal first aid kits. Visit www.facebook.com/CityofChestermere.
