Residential Waste Reminders

Christmas trees, pumpkins, grass clippings, leaves and branches can go where?

  • The yard is open Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. We are closed on statutory holidays.

Public Works Weekend Hours

  • Weekend hours: April 1 to November 15 the yard is open from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. During the summer, the yard is open on weekends for grass clippings, leaves and branches and recycling of electronics and paint.
  • Bring Christmas trees, pumpkins, grass clippings, leaves and branches to the Public Works yard for composting.
  • Sod or diseased branches will not be accepted.
Reminders
  • Garbage pickup begins at 7 a.m.. Any garbage that is not out by this time may not be picked up.
  • All garbage must be placed in an appropriate bag or container.
  • Ensure that unsafe items, such as broken glass, etc, are safely packaged before placing in garbage.
  • Only household waste will be taken.

The Public Works Department for the Town of Chestermere is responsible for Roads, Parks, Sewer and Water. This department includes a Public Works Director and Assistant Director with a team of 20 full time staff and approximately 45 seasonal staff.

The Roads Division is responsible for the maintenance of the roadway systems (snow clearing, street sweeping, gravel, etc.), culverts, curbs, gutters, asphalt, sidewalks, street signs, street line painting, pothole repair and storm water systems.

The Parks Division is responsible for the maintenance of 37 parks and green spaces, boulevards, over 3000 trees, flower beds, bike path system and the boat launch.

The Public Works Department also oversees the operation and maintenance of the water and sewer systems and solid waste contractors.

The Public Works yard is located on the south side of Highway 1A, approximately one kilometre east of the Highway 1 overpass, right next to the old waterslide site.

Garbage Collection

Garbage will be collected on all holidays except Canada Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Water Meters

Please be advised the following procedures are to be followed to facilitate the installment of water meters:

  • There must be a meter horn (obtained with plumbing permit) installed and it must be in a frost free area (heat in house).
  • Five (5) business days notice must be given.
  • The water meter MUST be installed before occupancy of the home.
  • Do not touch or tamper with the curb valves.

Water Levels

Western Irrigation District controls the level of the water in Chestermere Lake. The starting date for filling the Lake could be as early as April 15th, depending on the progression of the melt of the ice sheet. The WID likes to have Lake Chestermere full by the first week of May. WID maintains the operating level at 1025.50 metres to 1025.60 metres until after the Thanksgiving long weekend at which time it is dropped to the winter level. Lake Weed Collection

The town would like to thank the lakefront owners who take the time and immense effort to collect weeds along their lakeshore frontage. Weeds are being collected daily from road curbside locations by the department.

Snow Clearing

Public Works is responsible for clearing the snow from major routes and priority locations throughout the town. For detailed information please see the Snow Maintenance Policy or check out the Snow Clearing Routes Map that show primary and secondary plowing routes as well as the roads in town that are plowed by the Province.
