Canada Day Weekend Reminders & Regulations

Canada Day Weekend

With soaring temperatures, easing of COVID-19 restrictions, a civic holiday, and the pull of the cool water of the lake, a busy weekend is anticipated for Chestermere.

Last weekend, Chestermere Peace Officers issued approximately 65-75 warning tickets and 20 tickets (for egregious violations) for beach goer parking violations.

If you’re planning to visit the beach area or the Chestermere Recreation Centre this weekend, here’s what you need to know:

Beach Parking Information

  • There is NO PARKING PERMITTED at Anniversary Park or in front of residents’ driveways.
  • There are ONLY 58 PARKING SPOTS FOR BEACH GOERS AT THE REC CENTRE parking lot. NOTE: As of June 30, the CRCA announced that they will be charging $25 per vehicle to park in their lot. Read more about that decision here.
  • Once the Rec Centre parking lot is full, you must find somewhere else to park. Recommended spots include the west side of West Chestermere Drive (without blocking other roadways), and the John Peake Park parking lot. If there is no room in these places, consider visiting the beach on another day.
  • If you are parking on a street, you cannot park on the grass and you cannot park within 1.5m of a driveway.

Beach Capacity Information

  • As per provincial easing of COVID-19 measures, there will be no capacity limits at the beach.
  • If someone is uncomfortable with the crowds, especially if you have not had your 2nd vaccination, you may want to consider visiting the beach on another day.
  • Fencing may still be up due to contractor availability to remove it.
  • As there will be no capacity limits, staff will not be monitoring the beach. However, RCMP and CPOs will be doing regular patrols in the area throughout the weekend.

General Beach Rules

  • Beaches and lakeside parks are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Booking a spot in advance is not an option.
  • The City of Chestermere is not responsible for loss or injury to park users or damaged property.
  • There is no lifeguard on duty. Enter the water at your own risk. Keep children within arms reach.
  • Pets must be on leash and stay on the grass. Take responsibility for picking up after your pet and for their behaviour.
  • Shade shelters under 10x10 feet are permitted on the grass, and shade options that do not need to be staked down are permitted on the sand area.
  • Do not dig below six inches in the sand. A filtration liner is installed under the beach. Digging or placing items such as umbrellas in the sand can puncture the liner.
  • Littering is prohibited.
  • Smoking and alcohol are not permitted.
  • BBQs are not permissible in the beach area.

Other General Canada Day Weekend Reminders & Regulations

  • City fireworks will be taking place on July 2 at 10:30 pm at the north end of the lake. Retail fireworks (for private use) are not permitted.
  • As we experience the current heatwave, residents are reminded to stay hydrated and be aware of signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • If you need an escape the heat, stop by the temporary cooling centre at City Hall (105 Marina Road – use the north entrance). Enjoy a quiet space with air conditioning, a cold water/electrolyte drink and freezie while reading a book or listening to your favorite podcast. Individual and small cohort seating is limited. Open from Tuesday, June 29 – Friday, July 2, 2021, from 9:00 am – 9:00 pm.
  • If you have concerns about poor behaviour at the beach, call the non-emergency RCMP line at 403-204-8900.
  • For visitors to Chestermere, we encourage you to support our businesses and shop local when visiting.
