Water Main Break

Emergency in Progress (1)

July 16, 2021 at 2 p.m.

Thank you to residents in the Westchester area for your continued patience as repairs to the water main rupture on Westchester Blvd. have been completed this week. EPCOR has rescinded the boil water advisory for the 16 homes that were impacted by the rupture and repairs, and full water service has been restored.

We now have more details to share about the water main line rupture on Tuesday, July 13. We have determined that the line ruptured and split at one of its joints, opening a sinkhole in front of 255 Westchester Blvd.

We are still working to determine the cause of the rupture, but it appears that portions of the ground may have had a differential or uneven settlement, causing the pipe to break. A second joint was uncovered in the repair process that appears to be in good condition, and we are confident we have located the only break in the line.

The line has now been repaired, pressure tested and disinfected. The line was also flushed to remove any contaminants and suspended solids that may have gotten into the line during the break and the repairs.

The next steps for the City will be to fill up the excavation site to the grade of the asphalt. After the site is filled in, it will need to dry out and settle for about 30 days before the City can schedule full repairs of the concrete curbs, gutter and sidewalks.

We will post further updates in the coming weeks on the timelines for these repairs to our website at chestermere.ca/westchester. Any questions can be directed to the Roads Team at (403) 207-2807 or roads@chestermere.ca.

Thank you again for your patience as this extensive repair work is completed!

For 16 impacted households on Westchester Blvd:

There is still some work needed to complete the repairs, but water service should resume by tonight or tomorrow. Impacted residents on Westchester Blvd will receive information from EPCOR that they are advised to boil water before use until final water quality testing has been completed on Friday.

In the interim, impacted residents on Westchester Blvd are welcome to use the water trailer provided by EPCOR for potable water until services are fully restored.

As crews had to excavate the road to gain access to repair the pipe, the site will be barricaded over night to ensure the safety of pedestrians and commuters.

Please note that after the pipe is repaired and the water service is restored, crews will not immediately fill the excavation site until they can confirm that the entire line of pipe is functioning properly and does not need further repairs.

Thank you again for your patience as this extensive repair work is completed.

July 13, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.
