October 17 Update: We’re ahead of schedule! Starting tomorrow, Friday, October 18, the new black garbage carts will begin to land on some Chestermere doorsteps. By the end of next week, all residents should have their new cart. Official garbage collection using the new carts begins Monday, October 28. Since taking over waste collection services from the now closed CUI, the City of Chestermere is delivering on its promise of enhanced services.
October 15: In response to customer feedback, and to improve collector safety, the City is providing black garbage carts to all homes at no additional cost.
“For a year and half, we have been working hard to untangle our utility challenges. Now that the City provides the services, we are able to make changes that reflect resident requests, improve collector safety and increase efficiencies,” says Mayor Chalmers.
Residents can expect to receive their new cart the week of October 21, with the first cart collection beginning the week of Monday, October 28. Residential bi-weekly collection dates and schedules will not change.
The black carts can hold up to three standard-sized garbage bags (of any type/colour), or residents can put household garbage loose in the cart. Any additional garbage left outside of the bin will not be collected.
The black bins are to be used for household garbage only including:
- Used packaging, non-stretchy bags
- Foam containers and packaging
- Diapers and personal hygiene products
- Non-recyclable plastic items
- Household items (dryer sheets, light bulbs, single-serve coffee pods)
Paper, recyclable plastic or organics must still go in either the blue recycling or green compost carts. Prohibited materials (such as harmful chemicals, explosive materials, etc.) will not be allowed in the black carts. Residents are urged to drop these types of items off at the Eco Centre (recycle drop-off). For a complete listing of what goes where, please visit chestermere.ca/recycle.
